Molly Tuttle Looks In From the Outside in 'Sleepwalking'

"'Sleepwalking' is one of the more personal songs on the album," says Tuttle. "I wrote it by myself, digging into the anxiety I have felt for many years about the effects of climate change and the ever-rising cost of living in the San Francisco Bay Area (where I grew up). I wanted to symbolically incorporate my experience as a woman with total hair loss (Alopecia Totalis) into the video for the song, because that part of who I am also informed the lyrics, in a subtler way. I lost my hair early on in life, and at times that experience has made me fear change and hold onto the past. With the visual, I wanted to raise the question of what it means to 'be yourself' again after a part of who you are disappears. What do we cling to in times of change? Hopefully each person who watches what we made will find a personal meaning in it."

Molly Tuttle has had a massive 2019, with one of the highlights being the release of her debut full-length album When You’re Ready. Of course, the masterful guitar flatpicker and rising songwriter been building up steam for several years, with recognition from an array of professional organizations that have given her awards, including the International Bluegrass Music Association and the Americana Music Association. Revered musicians like Dolly Parton, Jason Isbell and Old Crow Medicine Show have invited her to share their spotlight, too.

She's got plenty of reasons to be confident. However, her latest music video, for the When You’re Ready song “Sleepwalking,” addresses some issues that continue to concern her.

" 'Sleepwalking' is one of the more personal songs on the album," Tuttle writes in a release.

Above, see the noir-tinged clip, written by Tuttle and directed by Dylan Reyes. Filmed at Dickerson Pike’s Dive Motel, the piece features Tuttle navigating a gloomy world where she's accompanied by a mannequin wearing her wig (as well as fiddlers Lillie Mae and Ivalee). Tonight, Tuttle's back in her adopted hometown following an extensive tour, and she'll play the Station Inn with Old Crow's Ketch Secor. The show kicks off at 9 p.m., and advance tickets are $20.
