Back in October, we got an introduction to High Road, the forthcoming follow-up to pop superstar Kesha’s triumphant 2017 LP Rainbow. She’d said in interviews that High Road was going to lean hard into contemporary pop, whether she decides to stay in that lane or not in the future.

The first track released, “Raising Hell,” struck a fine balance between being affirming and encouraging folks to party their asses off. The music video for “Raising Hell” and the live performance on Kimmel, assisted by bounce queen Big Freedia were both spectacular productions. So is the video for the new single “My Own Dance,” which you can see above.

In the clip, directed by Allie Avital, Kesha wakes up in a strange spot, a sort of Hotel California populated by … party-hearty extras from Spring Breakers and … the Grady twins from The Shining, but they’ve been taking hip-hop dance lessons? Cloning is also part of the story, per a tweet from Kesha herself.

Anyhow, I’d be running for the nearest exit, but Kesha keeps her cool, wagging a finger here and flipping a couple birds there as her fellow guests try to drag her into whatever their thing is. “I don’t do that dance,” she speak-sings in the hook. “I only do my own dance.” The rhythm-heavy song focuses on listening to yourself and not what other folks would tell you to do. As she explained to The Atlantic, that includes coming to terms with people telling her to "shut up and sing," that tired old sentiment that seems to get hurled at any artist who comments on social or political issues — especially artists who happen to be women. Also, in the video, that seems to include soaking in a wading pool full of Lucky Charms.

There hasn’t been a tour announcement yet, but keep an eye on Kesha’s website and her social media for updates ahead of High Road's Jan. 10 release date.
