Going by the tracks

we've heard so far

from Lillie Mae Rische's forthcoming solo debut Forever and Then Some, the longtime fiddler and singer (first with her family's band, Jypsi, and recently as a member of Jack White's band) has gotten very articulate about what can be a difficult topic for anyone: making peace with yourself.

"It took a while to see / I ain't drifted off completely / But a broken heart / Will forget the reins it set free," she sings in "Wash Me Clean," an agile country dance tune with a sad, sweet melody. Jack White produced the album, which features performances from a top-grade band including ringers from his orbit and several of Rische's siblings. The way Rische's voice skips across the top of the track reminds me a little of the Dixie Chicks' take on country. Give it a spin above and see if you don't hear the same thing.

"I wrote 'Wash Me Clean' near the boardwalk in Daytona, Fla.," Rische told Elle. "I had just come off a two-week run with Jack on the Blunderbuss Tour. I got to play skee ball where The Allman Brothers used to and wrote this song too."

Forever and Then Some is due April 14 via Third Man Records, and you can catch Rische and band at this year's CMA Music Festival in June, or at the Sloss Music Fest in Birmingham in July.
