A video of a producer chopping up samples went viral this past week, eventually gaining the attention of rapper Meek Mill, who expressed an interest in working with the then-unnamed beatsmith. Rather than drag out the social media Cinderella story, the MPC maestro quickly revealed himself as DJ Trizzy, who’s based in Charlotte, N.C.
It was a feel-good tale that even generated an embedded-Tweet-heavy BuzzFeed post. Turns out there’s a Nashville connection, too.
Shannon Sanders, a Grammy-winning R&B artist and accomplished music business pro (who launched 102.1 The Ville, which the Scene crowned Best Soul Radio Station in 2018’s Best of Nashville issue) reposted the video on his Instagram account. Sanders noted that the sped-up, chopped-up track was “In My Mind,” a song first produced and performed by Sanders on his debut album 20 years ago. The video seems to feature Heather Headley’s cover, which Sanders also helped produce. Headley herself even tweeted a series of tongue-in-cheek “Yeahs” at the now-viral producer. (The title on the upload of Trizzy’s YouTube page confirms the track is “In My Mind.”)
“As the original producer, I wanted to show some love,” Sanders wrote on his post, and told the young man to keep the fire coming.
Sanders and his longtime collaborator Drew Ramsey have worked with other artists including Headley, John Legend and India.Arie. Maybe Meek and DJ Trizzy will be the latest additions when the recording session finally happens. Meanwhile, Meek Mill and Jay-Z’s RocNation have announced a collaborative label called Dream Chasers Records — potentially taking that sample even further.
