Daniella Mason Fights Overthinking in 'Get Me Out of My Head’ [Fresh Track]

As contributor Lance Conzett pointed out in his 2018 Scene cover story on the development of a rich pop music scene in Nashville, one thread that ties the diverse artists in his story together is exceptional songwriting skills. Among those superlative songsmiths is Daniella Mason, whose foray into danceable contemporary pop started with a self-titled record in 2017 and continues through a series of shorter-form releases, collectively titled State of Me.

The series kicked off last year with a four-song EP called Emotional State, and the next installment, called Mental State, is due later in the spring. As Conzett pointed out, Mason has a knack for getting quickly to the emotional focus of a song without it feeling like something that’s designed — a blurring of the lines between art and craft. That’s a good way to describe “Get Me Out of My Head,” a track previewing Mental State that hit the web late this past week. Made with help from fellow popsmith Lo and producer Jon Santana, the song is a look at finding a way out of your own cyclical thought patterns.

“The funny thing is that ‘Get Me Out of My Head’ was the only one on this EP I kept really getting in my head about,” Mason told the blog Just Jared when the track premiered. “Everyone around me had to take turns pulling me out and talking me off the ledge of just starting over. But here we are, so I obviously figured out how to get out of there. Ironically, it’s super freeing to sing out loud for me. It’s the one that I really let loose on at my shows. So, I’m hoping my fellow over-thinkers can relate and let loose a little with me, if only for 3 minutes and 13 seconds.”
