Cream Calendar Alert: Greg Cartwright Heads to Soft Junk on Saturday

Greg Cartwright with The Oblivians at The 5 Spot for Sweet by Sweet Time Fest, August 2019

Scenesters who were paying close attention might recall that one tiny thing went awry with the second run of the rock festival Sweet by Sweet Time in August. Greg Cartwright — frontman of legendary Memphis rockers The Oblivians (among many other bands) and one of the finest rock songwriters in the game — was initially going to do a DJ set at East Side watering hole Duke's with selections from his extensive collection of 45s, but a scheduling conflict threw a bucket of cold water on that.

If you made the scene, in which The Oblivians and tons of other bands played over a two-day, three-show run, you probably forgot all about the dance party that wasn't. But it seems Cartwright hasn't. He'll be in the DJ booth at Duke's on Saturday night. And he's going to do Music City one better, too: He'll play a free solo gig over at DIY spot Soft Junk.

Duke's co-owner and Country Westerns frontman Joey Plunket will also play a short set, as well as local narrative-driven songsmith Nick Woods. Third Man Records co-owner Ben Blackwell will be on hand to spin some records, too. The whole thing kicks off at 7:30 p.m. Keep an eye on the Facebook event page for updates.
