Some ado has been made of the fact that, on their new self-titled record, locals The Apache Relay have moved away from

the big, earnest folk sound that defined their debut album, American Nomad

, and toward a soul-inspired, classic pop aesthetic. Perhaps the best example of this is album-opener "Katie Queen of Tennessee," a song for which the band recently unveiled a rather delightful video —

a video that features a whole bunch of youngsters dancing in Vince Gill and Amy Grant's barn

, naturally.

For the fourth installment of our ongoing Live in the Morgue in-office performance series, we at the Cream thought we'd invite The Apache Relay in to Scene HQ and see just how that lush new sound of theirs translates. Above you can see the boys playing "Katie Queen of Tennessee" in our archives (known in the biz as the "morgue"). If that bearded guitarist looks familiar to you, that's because it's Mike Harris, who also served as a guest player on Promised Land Sound's recent Live in the Morgue installment. Give the performance a look above or via the Scene's YouTube channel, and see more LITM performances here.

Live in the Morgue was directed by Anthony Simpkins of GemsOnVHS, with camera operation by Sam White and Seth Graves. Audio was recorded by Mike Colman and mastered by Sam Johnson.
