"What's most interesting about the Nashville-recorded country rock of Promised Land Sound," Scene contributor Edd Hurt wrote back in September in reference to the full-length debut from locals Promised Land Sound, "is how artfully the early 1970s sonic reference points have been modified with doses of garage rock." Indeed, The Band, Gram Parsons and his Flying Burrito Brothers and Byrds, Badfinger — it's hard not to drop those names when talking about frontman Joey Scala and his scruffy crew of Southern-rocking noodlers. But as Edd points out, it's important to note that PLS is doing more than just mimicking a 40-year-old aesthetic — they're stirring those sounds into 21st century garage rock.
For the second installment of Nashville Cream's ongoing Live in the Morgue in-office performance series (see them all via this link), we invited Promised Land Sound to play in our archives — sometimes known in the newspaper biz as "the morgue." They brought along with them Mike Harris of fellow local rock 'n' roll outfit The Apache Relay (hear the Relay's latest record right here), and Harris laid down some lithe slide guitar on a pair of tunes. One of those is a brand-new, down-tempo, Crazy Horse-esque ballad called "Oppression," and we're happy to be debuting that one here on the Cream. Watch the performance above or via the Nashville Scene YouTube channel.
Stay tuned for more from Promised Land Sound. Live in the Morgue was directed by Anthony Simpkins of GemsOnVHS, with camera operation by Thom King and Carson Gilliland, audio by Mike Colman and mastering by Sam Johnson. Promised Land Sound is currently on tour with the excellent Angel Olsen. See all of their dates after the jump.
