AmericanaFest is comin’ to town, bringing an absolute shedload of musicians to venues all over town from Sept. 15 through 19. As you peruse the lineups, you’re bound to notice lots of (real or stage) names with a certain kind of folksiness that is also prevalent in the world of professional baseball. With that in mind, we’re proud to present our annual quiz in which we challenge you, dear reader, to separate the songsmiths and troubadours from the pitchers, catchers and fielders. (Maybe I’m biased since I’ve gone informally by “Goose” for more than two decades, but I’m fond of nicknames, and “Extra Innings” has a nice ring to it. So we’ll keep it.) 

Among our list of names, half belong to artists performing at AmericanaFest 2026, and the other half belong to ball players — some currently on an MLB roster, some from the annals of history. We’ll give special thanks as always to Nashville music-scene booster Tyler Glaser, a lifelong baseball fan who also runs the appropriately named Instagram account @baseballplayerswithgreatnames, for his help rounding up the primo player handles. — STEPHEN TRAGESER, Music Editor
