When Lynyrd Skynyrd's Ronnie Van Zant asked the question recalled in the headline above, thousands of fans screamed back "Free-ee-ee Bir-rr-rd!" encouraging a practice that to this day plagues cover bands as the favorite request of drunk guys everywhere. So I fully expect to hear somebody say this every time they walk into the new Freebirds World Burrito location opening later this summer at 3800 Hillsboro Road in Green Hills.
The Austin-based fast casual restaurant has expanded to almost 90 locations since being founded in 1987. They claim this rapid growth is the result of their menu of burritos, tacos, nachos, bowls and salads that is made to order using fresh ingredients. An open kitchen concept allows diners to see their food being made by employees who are referred to as "Tribe Members."
A quick check of Google Maps shows that the location of Nashville's first Freebirds will be about a quarter-mile from the Chipotle in Green Hills, just on the other side of Hillsboro High. It will be interesting to see how the two burritoriums compare once they are in direct competition, but if you want to try out Freebirds before they officially open their bricks-and-mortar, they have a mobile option for you.
The Freebirds food truck will be open at the future location from today until the restaurant opens. It will be serving on-the-go burritos, tacos, quesadillas, burrito bowls and more, and will accept cash or credit cards. If you can't wait for a sit-down Freebirds burrito, go try the portable version.
