Much of the restaurant industry has had to change its business model rapidly due to COVID-19, and we’re trying to highlight the Nashville places that are attempting to stay open. Each day we will give you a critic’s pick for a restaurant and a dish, as well as a running list of restaurants still open that you can support. Today: Sperry’s.
I’ve joked with friends for years that the most Belle Meade thing in Belle Meade is not the mansion, it’s Sperry’s. It’s one of the few exceptions to my “no steakhouses” rule for three reasons: the atmosphere and service are always excellent, the throwback salad bar is near perfect and the steaks are good enough to justify a pricey meal without taking out a second mortgage (I’m looking at you, downtown steakhouses). It’s been a site for celebrations with friends or a night out with my better half.
So, I wondered, how would it translate as takeout in the COVID-19 era? The answer is “much better than I thought possible.” My wife and I, desperate for a good meal after a week of leftovers and pantry raids, ordered last week and were delighted with the results. The shrimp cocktail didn’t come hanging over the side of a glass like in the restaurant, but the chilled crustaceans were still big and delicious. Our steaks were perfectly medium-rare and the bernaise sauce held up well in the 20 minute ride from Harding Pike to our home. The creamed spinach was just as rich and delicious as it would have been coming to our table. Sperry’s has learned a lesson other restaurants have not about trying to save on takeout containers — if you want to maintain some semblance of proper temperature on the drive, put things in their own box with a little bit of foil to insulate the food. Out hot food was warm and our cold dish was still cool. So when you’ve made all the fried rice you can handle and need something a little indulgent, Sperry’s can do the trick.
