First Bite: Saint Anejo

Smoked chicken taco from Saint Anejo

The latest Chris Hyndman/M Street venture, Saint Anejo, began serving lunch today after opening a couple of weeks ago for dinner.

We dropped by and sat at the bar for a quick lunch and it makes a good first impression. The stools were comfortable and the service good. The menu is based around upscale variations on traditional Mexican favorites and lunch seems to be centered on the taco options. We ordered a couple — a batter-fried shrimp version and a smoked chicken option that had a slice of avocado — which set us back about $10. Both were tasty, even if the corn tortillas didn't always hold up to the sauces.

We also ordered a trio of "designer salsas." Of the three, a serrano-pineapple version was the best, followed closely by a traditional verde that had avocado chunks in it.

Lunch for one wasn't cheap — $21, including tip — but then again if I'm looking for value Mexican, I'm probably headed down Nolensville Road, anyway. It's a beautiful space that reminded me a bit of Tavern, another Hyndman-owned restaurant.

We're looking forward to checking out the rest of the menu with an eye on a few things that looked particularly interesting: duck confit enchiladas with a peanut mole; wagyu skirt steak fajitas; chile tuna ceviche with avocado and crispy leeks.

Saint Anejo is located at 1120 McGavock Street in the Gulch. Phone: 615.736.5301. Website: http://mstreetnashville.com/restaurants/saint-anejo
