Last week's entry on breakfast at Miel got me thinking, once again, about the $7 press pot of coffee.
I drink pressed coffee. But I can't wait until I can get to Bongo or Frothy: I make it at home, as soon as I'm out of bed. That makes me feel very thrifty, especially since I read that a daily trip to Starbucks, weekdays only, could add up to $800 a year. Chumps.
I do love good coffee, though. And by "good" coffee, I mean good enough. Something from Costco or Whole Foods, usually. Or Bongo if I'm feeling flush.
As a thought exercise, I've started calculating the cost of the individual components of my life. I put the pencil to to the coffee consumption and came up with this: I drink a pound of coffee a week. I use a generous 1/4 cup of ground beans every day to make a French press of coffee. That's two cups of ground coffee a week, or a pound. At about $11 a pound, I'd spend $44 a month on coffee. With the slightly less expensive Costco Jamaican Blue Mountain, that's about $7.50/pound, or $30 a month.
That means that, before even stepping foot into Bongo, I spend about $400 a year on coffee. What's the figure on your coffee counter? And more important, can I write it off as a freelance expense?
