The Big Rube — Ruby Ann’s — $5.05

It’s probably for the best that this biscuit-and-burger stand doesn’t open until 9 a.m. Any earlier and I might make the Big Rube a too-frequent breakfast, located as it is in the former Birdhouse space dangerously close to my home. Ruby Ann’s biscuit, flaky and moist, is slathered with goat cheese rendered gooey by the heat of the chicken; that fried breast filet, hearty and lightly battered, comes brushed with pepper jelly. The combination of spicy, sweet and savory is an optimal start to the day — so long as you have time for a quick nap afterward. The bold and hungry can venture into the rest of Ruby Ann’s simple, reasonably priced menu for a side: The french fries are crisp and clean, cut in a unique twist, while the soft-serve and the Snowstorm (a sort of play on a Dairy Queen Blizzard) might soon give the nearby Pharmacy Burger a run for its money.
