Some might say six bucks for a bologna sandwich isn’t really all that cheap. But the Southern Favorite at East Nashville’s Tower Market and Deli isn’t the Oscar Mayer-on-Bunny-Bread concoction of your youth, the one you munched on while parked in front of the TV after school. Well, it’s similar … just a whole lot bigger. Made with two thick slices of fried bologna, gobs of yellow mustard and melted American cheese, the Southern Favorite is a two-hander of a grilled sandwich that makes for a good grab-and-go lunch if you’re passing the Gallatin Avenue deli and don’t feel like a more unwieldy option — like the great-but-messy Beef Brisket Sandwich or the Classic Turkey Club, for instance. Fried bologna, of course, isn’t for everyone, but if you’re the type, it’ll hit you right in the nostalgia zone. Tower’s market also has more options for sides than the standard sandwich-shop fare — fruit, chips, pretzels, snacks, jerky and much more — and the iced coffee ain’t half bad.
