Two Opportunities to Raise Your Spirits (Knowledge)
Two Opportunities to Raise Your Spirits (Knowledge)

Home mixology is all the rage right now, and there’s really no place safer to experiment with cocktails than in the comfort of your own home bar. Plus, if you screw something up, it doesn’t cost you $12, and you can either drink it or pour it down the drain!

A new operation named Liquor Lab has recently begun taking reservations for what look like fun classes in their facility downtown in the basement of the old building at 144 Second Ave. N., Suite 10. They are offering several different classes focusing on topics like Summer Margaritas and Tacos; The World of Whiskey; and Classic Cocktails You Should Know. Each class features three to four recipes and provides all the equipment you’ll need to mix you own cocktails. They also feature light bites from local vendors like Mas Tacos and Peg Leg Porker to ensure students have a little something in their stomach before tasting their creations, and there is a small retail shop where you can pick up drink kits and tools to continue your education at home. You can view the schedule here and watch the print edition of the Scene in a few weeks for a more detailed description of their operation.

Over at City Winery, the talented mixology team also wants to shake up a little knowledge for you with a new series of Spirits MasterClasses, six events that will each focus on a different spirit, its history and production process, cocktail recipes and suggested pairings. The first class is tonight, Friday, July 26, and will focus on tequila, with four different tastings accompanied by a light charcuterie plate. Subsequent classes will focus on gin, vodka, rum, cognac and brandy, and finally whiskey. Classes begin at 6:30 and are held in City Winery’s comfortable private dining room. Tuition for one class is $35, or you can sign up for the whole series at a discounted rate of $170, which is basically like getting one class for free. For a full schedule and to sign up for the whole semester, visit the Spirits MasterClass website.
