Much of the restaurant industry has had to quickly change its business model due to COVID-19, and we’re trying to highlight the Nashville places that are attempting to stay open. Each day we will give you a critic’s pick for a restaurant and a dish, as well as a running list of restaurants still open that you can support. Today: Urban Cookhouse.
I’ve been a fan of Urban Cookhouse at 1907 Broadway in Midtown ever since it first opened back in 2016. Here are a couple of reasons why I recommend it to people looking for a hearty, healthy meal in that neighborhood, best known for bushwhackers and rowdy country bars along Division Street. The first reason isn’t quite as important in these current days of pre-2000 traffic levels in Nashville, but Urban Cookhouse actually has a free (yes, you read that correctly) parking lot behind the restaurant. Now, you need to be actually eating at the restaurant to take advantage of their gratis parking spaces, and those booters in Midtown take their jobs extremely seriously, but that’s a great perk when you’re looking for a meal and you’re not on foot.
Second, they don’t even have a fryer in the entire building, preferring to cook their food on Big Green Egg grills and focusing on healthier side dishes than at many other nearby eateries. In fact, when they were just starting out, a bunch of Belmont athletes discovered they could get healthy protein-filled dishes like delicious grilled chicken, smoked turkey and lime-marinated steak and began to frequent Urban Cookhouse in lieu of the university dining hall as their own training table. Eventually, they convinced Belmont to allow them to use their “Bruin Bucks” dining plan at the restaurant, which proved to be a real boost for the fledgling eatery.
Two ancillary offerings really stand out at Urban Cookhouse: the strawberry lemonade and decadent orange rolls from a small bakery in Montgomery, Ala. OK, so not everything is completely healthy there.
To help feed your family during the COVID-19 crisis, Urban Cookhouse is offering a “Take It to the House” meal deal for $36, with enough food for a hungry family of four. The deal includes your choice of grilled pineapple ham, smoked turkey, lime-marinated steak, chipotle braised pork, grilled chicken or wood-fired shrimp, accompanied by two family-size side dishes from a list of choices, including hot cheddar pasta, broccoli salad, roasted vegetables, rice pilaf, fresh fruit or a garden salad. You’ll also get four of those delicious orange rolls, which you can ask for either warm or frozen, plus a half-gallon of sweet or unsweet tea. You can upgrade your drink option to the strawberry lemonade for an extra $3.25, and you should — because that stuff is a great mixer with any clear spirit!
You can order the Take It to the House deal for curbside carryout or delivery, but with that big ol' parking lot, it’s one of the most convenient reasons to get out of the house for a few minutes, so drop on by!
