Much of the restaurant industry has had to rapidly change its business model due to COVID-19, and we’re highlighting the Nashville places that are attempting to stay open. We will give you a critic’s pick for a restaurant and a dish, as well as a running list of restaurants still open that you can support. Today: STK
As some old clown used to sing, “You deserve a break today.” And I’m not talking about some drive-through Big Mac; I’m speaking of a real treat. Face it, you’ve been through a lot these last five yearmonths, and you deserve a little luxury in your life, specifically the surprisingly affordable splurge of a carryout meal from STK in the Gulch.
In olden times, a meal in the opulent dining room at STK was reserved for special occasions and big ballers with expense accounts. But hey, they’ve gotta pay the rent now, too. The beneficiary of STK's new, more casual attitude is you, dear reader, and I’m going to point you in the right direction for a meal that’s a steal.
A quick look at the online menu at STK shows that the restaurant is making a real effort to provide some extra value in these tough times. For example, there’s a fun burger-and-a-beer deal, but not just any old burger. This particular patty is a 7-ounce slab of ground Wagyu served with cheese and special sauce on a sesame seed bun along with an order of truffled potato wedges. It also comes with a tall boy of PBR to wash it down with, all for the completely reasonable price of $10.99. Wagyu and a Pabst? That’s a delightful highbrow/lowbrow pairing if you ask me, and a damn tasty burger. [Note: since I experienced this, the latest Metro edict banning carryout alcohol sales in the urban core means that this can currently only be ordered for delivery. Even easier!]
One other nice development during the pandemic is that restaurant kitchens seem to have completely lost the ability to judge portion size, especially for carryout orders. Rather than be thought miserly with their value, they overcompensate by packing boxes full of food that are purportedly “dinners for two.” Case in point was the “Vibe & Divide” dinner for two that I ordered for easy pickup at the restaurant. (The first hour of parking is free in the garage, so it’s not a problem to park and run in for a virtually contactless handover of your food.)
For only $69,99, we received enough food for at least two full meals for the two of us, plus a bite or two for the dog as a treat. Consider what came in our bags: a blue iceberg salad, steak, chicken, corn pudding, tater tots and chocolate cake. Now, let’s literally unpack what that represents. The salad was four iceberg cups filled with crumbled bleu cheese and huge bacon crumbles, plus some extra creamy bleu cheese dressing. It was easily enough food for four separate servings of salad. The chicken was free-range and delicious, and I don’t know about you, but a half-chicken is two meals for me. The steak was 8 ounces of peppery Wagyu flatiron, and we saved it for a special treat meal the night after our original order.
The tots were the biggest surprise and understatement — 10 cheesy tots, each the size of a baby’s fist. Creamy on the inside with an appropriately crispy exterior, they were served with a chili remoulade dipping sauce. For dessert, the big slab of rich chocolate cake could also have been stretched to two meals if we had any sort of self-restraint, which we didn’t. A quick perusal of the menu revealed that our weekend of eating would have come up to more than a hundred bucks if we’d ordered à la carte, so color me impressed by the value.
If you prefer to grill your own steak, STK also offers cook-at-home family meals for two or four with their succulent filets and lots of sides. Ordinarily, I’d prefer this option, but it’s tough to beat the convenience of the Vibe & Divide. And that burger and beer dinner will be a lifesaver the next time I just don’t feel like cooking.
