Much of the restaurant industry has had to rapidly change its business model due to COVID-19, and we’re highlighting the Nashville places that are attempting to stay open. Each day we will give you a critic’s pick for a restaurant and a dish, as well as a running list of restaurants still open that you can support. Today: San Antonio Taco Company.
When considering carryout options, it’s sometimes necessary to consider how much your enjoyment of the food from a particular restaurant depends on the ambiance or even the history of good times that you have had at that particular locale. When it comes to San Antonio Taco Co., that experience matters a lot. Since my high school days, that expansive wooden patio facing Vanderbilt’s campus across 21st Ave. has been one of my happy places, with countless hours whiled away drinking bottled Coronas (sigh) out of an ice-filled rusty bucket and dodging the drips of queso as they slid off the thin tortilla chips on the way to my maw.
SATCO was also the first place that many of us ever encountered what is now the ubiquitous dining concept of “fast casual” where you filled out your own order slip with a dull golf pencil and handed it to a counter worker to pass it to the kitchen for quick eventual retrieval from another counter. It’s also the first place my younger self’s tapped budget learned that adding too many items to each tiny taco made a real difference in the cost of the meal, teaching valuable lessons about frugality and restraint.
Despite the current (temporary) lack of access to that deck, the rest of the ordering process at SATCO makes it an ideal option for takeout dining. And when dining does return at limited capacity, the al fresco experience on that patio should be fairly easy to manage, I hope!
Going online to peruse the menu is like visiting an old friend who you’ve missed these past yea or to seven weeks, and all the greatest hits are available for pickup or delivery through DoorDash. The fajitas still range between $1.79 and $2.19 apiece before you fall victim to the inevitable add-ons like beans, green peppers and onions, cheese, lettuce, tomato and guac that can pretty much double the cost if you get extravagant. These are small tortillas, so more than one or two extra items tend to overfill your taco anyway, plus since you’re taking it home, you probably have some of those items in your own fridge.
Tacos and enchiladas are also solid plays, especially the enchilada plate for a little more than seven bucks. Of course you need to get some of the queso, which reheats quite nicely after a quick nuking, and don’t forget about SATCO’s chicken wings, which are often an overlooked treat.
We’ll be back on that patio soon enough, but for a taste of a comfortable memory, SATCO is an excellent takeout option!
