Much of the restaurant industry has had to quickly change its business model in a couple of weeks due to COVID-19, and we’re trying to highlight the Nashville places that are attempting to stay open. Each day we will give you a critic’s pick for a restaurant and a dish, as well as a running list of restaurants still open that you can support. Today: the Capitol Grille.
One thing that has been reaffirmed to me during the current unpleasantness is the enduring importance of soup. Making a batch of soup is a fine way to burn up some hours on an endless Sunday with no meaningful sports on television, and it’s a great way to stretch leftovers and extra bits of produce before you would normally resign them to the trash heap. Extra soup freezes wonderfully for a future meal and can be saved in a zippered plastic bag or deli containers of any size between single-serving to family-sized.
On the restaurant front, there are several local establishments that are revered for their iconic soups. Think of Teresa Mason’s beloved chicken tortilla soup from Mas Tacos, Por Favor. (Although I’m on record for loving her pozole verde even more!) No meal at Midtown Cafe is complete without at least a cup of their lemon-artichoke soup made from a recipe that is so secret and important to the restaurant that owner Randy Rayburn paid a pretty penny for it when he purchased Midtown, and he has since refused to share it with multiple national food magazines despite numerous repeated requests.
Another restaurant-defining soup in town is what attracted me to the carryout menu from the Capitol Grille at the Hermitage Hotel. They’re offering a full complement of à la carte items off their regular menu, including their sweet onion bisque with an adorable miniature grilled brie sandwich plus bacon and chives, an item that never falls off their seasonal food offering. As with Midtown’s lemon-artichoke, I can’t visit without ordering that item!
In addition to the regular menu offerings, the Capitol Grille is whipping up daily thematic family-style meals to-go on a rotating basis. Monday is vegan-centric, filled with expertly prepared veggie dishes like citrus-roasted beets and lemon thyme tofu “scallops.” Tuesday is a high-class taco night, Wednesday features pasta dishes, Thursday is for barbecue, and Saturday is a classic surf-and-turf meal with tenderloin and shrimp-and- grits. But Friday night is the real highlight for me, an evening of “Capitol Grille Favorites” featuring the sweet onion bisque, their version of Nashville hot chicken, red-skin mashed potatoes, collard greens and coconut cake. Priced between $85-$90 and sized to feed a family of four, this is some high-tone dining at a reasonable price, plus they’re offering 15% off many of their bottles of wine with the order of a family meal.
They also offer elevated snacks for home consumption like their Matinee and Netflix Binge Snack kits with pints or quarts respectively of the hotel’s white truffle popcorn, sweet potato chips, house-made pork rinds and spiced pecans for $19 or $35 depending on how much snacking you intend to do. Call 615-244-3121 to order ahead and pick up your bounty of food at the entrance to the Hermitage at 231 Sixth Ave. N. You deserve a little luxe treatment right about now, and Capitol Grille is happy to oblige!

While some may have had existing relationships with delivery providers (the bottom list) most of this list are offering the service for the first time. Most offer curbside pickup, but check when you order. As this list is a moving target, please leave any changes, suggestions or omissions in the comments.
