When I was growing up, I must have decided that Cap’n Crunch just didn’t have quite enough sugar for me, so I upgraded my favorite breakfast bowl of choice, King Vitamin, another roof-of-your-mouth-shredder of a cereal that lured me in with its commercial’s constant call to action: “King Vitamin! Have breakfast with the King!”

Well, "breakfast with the King" will take on a whole new meaning Saturday, April 13, as The Harpeth Hotel invites music fans in for a gala Elvis Brunch from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. They’re whipping up special menu items as homages to Elvis, and they’re not afraid to get a little punny about it.

To wit, from a release:

  • The King’s French Toast: "A sweet and salty masterpiece complete with bacon, peanut butter and banana whipped cream."

  • Heartbreak Chicken Fried Steak: "Comfort food worthy of The King himself, served with buttermilk biscuits and cheddar grits."

  • Jailhouse Ribs: "A Memphis-style BBQ that’s as rebellious and satisfying as rock ’n' roll itself."

  • Blue Suede Waffle: "This breakfast sings sweet and tangy, with the twist of lemon curd and blueberries."

As fun as some of these dishes sound, the real attraction will be the performance by Chuck Baril, one of Nashville’s most sought-after Elvis tribute artists (don’t say "impersonator"!) for the first two hours of the brunch.

If you doubt the historical accuracy of Baril’s bona fides, the link to the Nashville Elvis website that was included with the announcement redirects to an online Canadian drugstore for some reason. Don’t click on that. Visit this site instead if you want to see what you’re in for.

Thank you very much!
