Lost in all the beer industry news of breweries moving, closing, merging and being purchased is the fact that Southern Grist Brewing Co. was bought by Xul Beer Company out of Knoxville late last year. The acquisition included both of Southern Grist’s taprooms in the Nations and in East Nashville, and eventually there will be a total name and branding change to Xul. They plan to continue brewing at least some of the legacy Southern Grist brands for the time being, but most of the production will be Xul products.
Xul was a relatively small brewery until it hit a home run with a new product line in 2023. The PB&J Mixtape series is described as a “gluten-free fruited sour fermented beverage made with real roasted peanuts." Usually released at around 6.5 percent ABV, this isn’t actually a beer at all. It’s basically a flavored alcoholic seltzer, but that hasn’t stopped the products from becoming so popular that people line up around the block to get a taste of new releases.
That’s because PB&J Mixtapes are objectively delicious and strongly nostalgic for generations who grew up on Uncrustables. Over the past few years, Xul has released many different flavors in the series, starting out with the stereotypical Concord grape before running through variants like banana, strawberry, blackberry, raspberry, blueberry, cherry and peach.
Now it’s Nashville’s turn, as both former Southern Grist locations will host the release of six different flavors of PB&J Mixtape on Friday, April 10, at 5 p.m. I’d suggest getting there early if you’re interested in sampling the flavors listed above, with the exception of strawberry and peach.
Xul does sell some of their products in cans and kegs at retail, but I don’t believe PB&J Mixtape is available outside of the brewery locations. So if you want it, this is your best chance. Check out Southern Grist’s Facebook page for more details, and good luck!
