Saturday, Aug. 7, is National Mead Day. I don’t know how you were planning on spending the holiday, but heading to HoneyTree Meadery at 4 p.m. should be part of the celebration. Mike Wolf, author of Barantined: Recipes, Tips and Stories to Enjoy at Home, will be at HoneyTree, East Nashville’s meadery.
Mead is perhaps the world's oldest alcoholic beverage, made with fermented honey and yeast. (Perhaps you remember references to it in your high school reading of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales.) Mead has changed a little since then. Like beer, wine and spirits, there’s a diversity of mead depending on its ingredients and its production methods. Dru Sousan, co-founder of HoneyTree, promises the release of some special meads, including Peach Mead, Habanero Mead and the 18 Percent Beast Mead at Saturday’s event.
The afternoon will include a big food pop-up with El Leon Dorado doing Bear Creek Farms pork shoulder tacos. Of course, Wolf will be on hand to sign books and to talk about cocktails you can make with mead. If you’re not familiar with Wolf’s book, a guide to making great cocktails at home, with details on how many local bartenders spent part of 2020, go back into the Scene archives to find out more here and here.
HoneyTree Meadery is located at 918 Woodland St.
