Many people know that Sylvia Ganier’s Green Door Gourmet farm hosts all sorts of events in their Grand Barn, and that she grows and sells all sorts of amazing produce in the acres of fields that surround the market shop. Most of the times when you see Ganier working in the fields on in the store, she’s dressed casually and probably has a little soil under her fingernails from digging in the dirt.
But she’s also quite the oenophile, even if she isn’t snobby about it. Her family cellar is always filled with amazing wines, and I’ve been fortunate enough to sample a few bottles from there from time to time. So she is quite well-qualified to host what should be a really fun wine tasting event at the farm, coming up this Friday, Nov. 2, beginning at 6 p.m. While the wines will be fine, the rest of the experience will be casual and irreverent, as befits Ganier’s personality and the whole atmosphere of Green Door.
Guests will sample wines from Treasury Wine Estates, specifically those that have scored 90+ points in the authoritative Wine Spectator guide. In part, poking a little fun at the whole concept of trying to objectively and subjectively rate wines on a 1-to-100 scale, and also to clear out her hoard of back issues, Ganier will give each guest an archival copy of the magazine that they can either take home as a memento or use to help stoke the big bonfire that will be the centerpiece of the party. Experts from Treasury will be on hand to answer your questions about their wines.
Tasting stations will be arranged near the fire around the Grand Barn, with food pairings for each wine prepared by Green Door chef Richard Jones, including wild mushroom vol-au-vent, pan-roasted duck breast, lobster rolls, grilled Certified Angus Beef with herb butter, and glazed emu meatloaf with blue cheese. If you can find a better place in town to sample emu meatloaf, please let me know about it!
The tasting will run from 6 to 9, and your $150 admission includes a welcome glass of bubbly plus all the wine and food tastings. Grab your ticket at the event website.
