Galzins to Open Belgian-Inspired Bar in The Nations

The husband-and-wife team of Tony and Caroline Galzin, whose Nicky’s Coal Fired has been a hit since opening (check out our review from May), are planning to open a second restaurant venture later this year. It’s a cocktail bar and cafe that will be called The Cardinal, according to a release today from the Galzins, and it's being built on a site at 1410 51st Ave. S., near Nicky’s, in The Nations neighborhood of West Nashville.

The Galzins, who prior to Nashville worked in Chicago restaurants, say they are inspired by “the allure of vintage neighborhood bars, especially those embodying the variety of cultural influences in Chicago.”

The Cardinal’s beverage list will emphasize Belgian beers and classic and creative cocktails, which will be complemented by “Northern European influenced” cuisine from chef Tony Galzin. Nicky’s beverage director, Tracy Ardoin-Jenkins, will oversee the cocktails.

The space will be inspired by Art Deco design, and the interior will include a 23-foot wood-and-formica bar salvaged from a 1930s neighborhood tavern in St. Paul, Minn. The Cardinal team is having the bar shipped in 20 pieces from St. Paul to Nashville, where it will be reassembled inside the new restaurant.

The Cardinal's 3,500-square-foot space will offer patio dining as well as seating at the bar and in the dining room. The Galzins hope to open it this fall.
