An East Nashville commercial building located about a mile-and-a-half north of Five Points is slated to house a New York City country-and-Western-centric bar concept called Skinny Dennis.

A social media page for the business notes a 2024 opening.

Billed as an authentic honky-tonk, Skinny Dennis operates in the Williamsburg neighborhood in Brooklyn, with its name paying tribute to late country musician and upright bass player Skinny Dennis Sanchez.

Zephaniah Ohora, Skinny Dennis owner, could not be reached for comment, and his business’s website does not offer an address for the Nashville location. However, a Metro beer licensing permit application references both “Skinny Dennis” and a 2635 Gallatin Ave. address.

According to a construction permit application for the property, Pfeffer Torode will design the bar space, with MTLC as the general contractor. Both are local companies.

The Skinny Dennis website notes Sanchez played bass in the band of deceased singer-songwriter Guy Clark during Clark’s time in Los Angeles. Sanchez, who had Marfan syndrome, stood 6-foot-11 and weighed 135 pounds, according to the book Without Getting Killed or Caught: The Life and Music of Guy Clark. Sanchez died in 1975, apparently onstage while performing, at age 28.

Seemingly now living in Nashville (read more here) — via Brooklyn and his native New Hampshire — Ohora has released two albums.

The building from which Skinny Dennis will operate has been home to an auto body repair shop and appliance supplies store and offers about 4,900 square feet. It will be updated to include a kitchen, according to the permit (for which no dollar value is included).

Scene sister publication the Nashville Post reported in November 2021 that McQuest Properties LLC paid $2.2 million for the building and an adjacent structure, located at 2605 Gallatin Ave. The Hideout Salon and Lounge and Osa Coffee Roasters operate at that building.
