Danielle Krysa: Shit Arlo Says

“Big Art,” Danielle Krysa

Everybody has their own inner bully. Stephen King named his “the boys in the basement,” and imagines them as a rowdy troupe of card-playing neighborhood guys who like to talk shit. Artist Danielle Krysa turned hers into a guy named Arlo. When Arlo says mean things to her — like, “Oh shit, is this a craft?” — she recognizes it as simply self-criticism, then turns it into something that’s very much a work of art. Krysa took a similar path when she started the popular blog The Jealous Curator — she used her resentment toward artists with great ideas to create a website that allowed a broader audience to absorb them. The work scheduled to show at Modfellows, Shit Arlo Says, has been curated by Pam Marlene Taylor with just that perspective in mind: Art can appeal to a broad audience without sacrificing vision. The opening reception was slated for Sunday, March 22, but in light of the advice to self-quarantine, the gallery has planned an online-only opening. Follow @modfellows_studio on Instagram for details on when and if the exhibit is on display. LAURA HUTSON HUNTER
