Come over here, friends, and warm your cold hip-hop hearts by this fire lineup. 2025 was a good year to be an old-head, with new records from veteran performers sounding fresh and ferocious. The auto-correct-infuriating Jestures by Minneapolis duo Atmosphere was at the front of the pack, a double disc of well-seasoned rhymes and beats percolating with midlife energy like an early-afternoon cup of coffee. After 30 years, Slug and Ant are still finding new ways to explore sound on their own terms, having inspired entire branches of the hip-hop history tree while sounding more like themselves than ever. Atmosphere is joined on the Winter Carnival Tour, coming to Brooklyn Bowl Thursday, by underground lifers Kool Keith, Sage Francis and R.A. the Rugged Man, masterful performers all and some of the most continually fascinating personalities in the indie hip-hop community.
