Critic's Pick: Sarah Jarosz

One great thing about Nashville music is how easily the singer-songwriter ethos merges with, well, Nashville itself. In other words, country and bluegrass provide a new context for singer-songwriters who work here. For Texas-born singer, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Sarah Jarosz, the post-folk music of Joni Mitchell is one point of reference, but Jarosz has perfected her own rigorous approach. Fellow Nashville musician Daniel Tashian added subtly futuristic production to Jarosz’s 2024 album Polaroid Lovers, which might be her most satisfying release to date. I’m also a fan of Jarosz’s work in the Americana trio I’m With Her, which released a superb album, Wild and Clear and Blue, in 2025. Polaroid Lovers made it clear that Jarosz feels comfortable bridging Americana, folk and pop. She’s currently touring around the 10-year anniversary of her Grammy-winning 2016 full-length Undercurrent, which established her as a major talent. It’s a great album, and apart from the aforementioned Polaroid Lovers, I’m not sure where I’d tell you to start if you don’t know her work. Build Me Up From Bones, from 2013, is engrossing and amazing, and don’t forget 2021’s exquisite Blue Heron Suite, which is both mystical and tough-minded.
