We don’t often see hometown heroes portrayed on local stages, so it was exciting to see Nashville Children’s Theatre open its 2023-24 season with the world premiere of Strong Inside. Based on the bestselling book by Andrew Maraniss and adapted by Tyrone L. Robinson, Strong Inside presents the true story of Nashville’s own Perry Wallace — who made history as the first African American to play college basketball in the deeply segregated Southeastern Conference. Approaching tough issues in an honest yet sensitive way and incorporating archival photos and news clips into its design, this powerful new work ensures that Wallace’s legacy will live on with young audiences.
