Weightlifting can seem like an individual pursuit, but communities do indeed spring from the shared interest of moving increasingly heavy amounts of iron up and down. And those communities can rally around each other and for their neighbors — as was the case with the Pride Deadlift Party held at Music City Muscle, organized by local body-positive personal trainer Barbara Puzanovova. The North Nashville gym — owned by local strongman Blake Harris — was decked out in rainbow gear while pop music blared, and queer folks and allies alike turned out to take turns deadlifting in front of a supportive and enthusiastic crowd. The event’s $2,090 proceeds went to Oasis Center and Trans Aid Nashville in a show of solidarity at a time when the state legislature is ostracizing trans youth.
