Inside Tony Youngblood's modular art pod in 2016
There aren’t a lot of art galleries that you can guarantee will contain art that every person will connect with. That’s the whole idea behind Modular Art Pods, the brainchild of local artist Tony Youngblood. Modular Art Pods is a system of interconnected cubes designed by individual artists. The separate pieces of work come together and create a tunnel, essentially forcing people to spend time alone connecting with each piece — physically, at the very least. A new iteration of MAPs is asking Nashville artists to participate.
Youngblood’s first iteration of MAPs was at abrasiveMedia in 2015, followed by another at OZ Arts Nashville in 2016. Youngblood licensed the project under Creative Commons, and Queen Ave. Collective took up the mantle in 2016. Now, artists David Hellams of The Crappy Magic Experience and Abbey Skojec plan to mount a new exhibition at Fort Houston in July.
Community and collaboration are at the core of this cool concept, which is why they’re calling for pod proposals from local artists for this summer’s event. It’s a neat opportunity to create and display art in a challenging, different way that requires thinking outside of the box (or inside the pod, I suppose). You can apply here until the end of March, and you can check out more on the Modular Art Pods website.Â
