Tango Buenos Aires: "Song of Eva Perón"
When: 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 18
Where: TPAC's Polk Theater
The tango’s rise from the 19th century slums and cathouses of Buenos Aires to a form embraced by upper classes and intellectuals in the mid 20th century is a cultural Cinderella story — or would be, if its standing hadn’t risen and dipped over the years, buffeted by forces ranging from political changes to American rock ’n’ roll. But elegance, rhythm and sinuous moves never go completely out of style, and the acclaimed troupe Tango Buenos Aires has done much to ensure the dance never loses its seductive sway.
In its current production, “Song of Eva Perón,” the troupe celebrates the First Lady of Argentina, who with her husband President Juan Perón elevated the dance to a national treasure during Peron’s 1950s rule.
