Studio Visit: Sarah Cihat

Ceramicist

Sarah Cihat

works out of her studio in East Nashville. She's originally from Cookeville, TN, but she moved to New York when she was 20 and went to Parsons School of Design. She got a lot of attention for an early collection, which Cihat told me was essentially her thesis project — the

Rehabilitated Dishware

line. You're probably familiar with that work, if not through Cihat directly than through the many designs that followed her lead, but she was the the first designer to take vintage plates and re-glaze them using contemporary silhouettes.

Since that first collection, Cihat's work has gotten more refined. Her current line, Mixte (available at Barneys), uses slip casts of gray porcelain with contrasting lines, a crosshatched texture around the base and a thick rim of copper around the edge. She recently relocated from her Williamsburg, Brooklyn, apartment to the house she shares with her husband and their two Italian greyhounds. Currently, she has an ongoing collaboration going with The Catbird Seat, who approached her when she went to dinner there for her birthday. She's designed six bowls for the high-end eatery so far.

Look through Cihat's website for more information about her work and some great photos of her studio.
