A fixture of Nashville's singer-songwriter community, Randy VanWarmer died Jan. 12 after a yearlong battle with leukemia. He'd undergone a bone marrow transplant in Seattle late last year, but experienced a number of complications after his body apparently rejected the transplant. A friend to many and something of a regular at the Bluebird since moving to Nashville in 1985, VanWarmer is best known for his hit "Just When I Needed You Most" and for writing Alabama's "I'm in a Hurry (And Don't Know Why)." A memorial service in honor of the singer-songwriter will be held at the Ryman Auditorium 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 30, on what would have been his 49th birthday. Michael Johnson and the Oak Ridge Boys will sing, and VanWarmer's brothers Ron and Dave and friend Parker McGee will speak.
