It’s hard to be a socially conscious WWE fan these days. Sure, wrestling fans have been conditioned to overlook uncomfortable uses of racial stereotypes in WWE’s ring for decades now, from the times when it seemed like every black wrestler was forced to do a rapping-and-dancing gimmick to storylines featuring evil Japanese businessmen who would threaten to “choppy choppy your pee pee.” Still, nothing has shaken this good redneck liberal like the recent news that WWE co-founder Linda McMahon will serve as Donald Trump’s pick to head the Small Business Administration. How am I supposed to enjoy the scheduled main event of “The Lunatic Fringe” Dean Ambrose vs. WWE World Champion AJ Styles — with guest ring announcer James Ellsworth, no less! — when I’m busy wondering just how much money the McMahons have given Trump over the years, enabling his run for the presidency in no small way? Can’t I just enjoy the Steel Cage Match between Dolph Ziggler and Intercontinental Champ The Miz without suffering an existential crisis? ISAAC WEEKS
