Waxahatchee & Hurray for the Riff Raff

Waxahatchee

We’ve all been lost. Lost in love, lost without love — no matter the cause, it’s human nature to, at some point, have absolutely no sense of direction, purpose or even self. On her 2017 release Out in the Storm, Waxahatchee’s Katie Crutchfield makes the most of one of life’s most uncomfortable inevitabilities. Following a breakup, Crutchfield crafted a collection of songs that almost gleefully dances through all the stages required for healing. In power-pop album opener “Never Been Wrong,” she owns up to liking, at least a little bit, the tumultuous drama — “Everyone will hear me complain / Everyone will pity my pain,” she sings. In the syrupy, organ-laced “Recite Remorse,” she admits her instincts were probably wrong from the start, singing: “See, I always gravitate toward / those who are unimpressed / I saw you as a big fish / I saw you as a conquest.” It’s satisfying to hear her start to find herself again with help from family in “Sparks Fly,” in which she sings: “And I see myself through my sister’s eyes / I’m a live wire, electrified.” Co-headlining the show (they’re alternating spots on the bill throughout the tour) is Hurray for the Riff Raff, the project of Alynda Segarra, a masterful folk singer-songwriter who finds strength in vulnerability. MEGAN SELING
