Warbly Jets

Influenced by the sound of now-defunct ’80s and ’90s British record label Creation Records, Los Angeles quartet Warbly Jets updates the style of such Creation bands as Oasis, My Bloody Valentine and The Creation themselves, whose ’60s recordings inspired the label’s name. Rewriting guitar pop is a tricky business, and I like the way Warbly Jets avoid the temptation to succumb to musical nostalgia on their excellent 2016 single “Alive,” which features a great guitar riff and lyrics that plumb the depths of the desire for fame and failure. “Alive” amounts to post-Britpop, but the song comes out of a long tradition of subtly tortured, overheated British Invasion rock that The Easybeats and The Who pioneered 50 years ago. I also enjoy their 2017 single “The Lowdown,” an insistent rocker with words that seem to be about the music business. Warbly Jets is a promising band — look for their debut full-length in October.  EDD HURT
