Although I like the way a good modern classic-rock band like, say, The Sheepdogs can rev up the basics, I observe how such skillful revivalism can sometimes be a substitute for old-fashioned verbal and emotional content. After forming five years ago, The Temperance Movement (who open Thursday for The Revivalists) released a promising self-titled 2013 full-length and went on to open a couple of Rolling Stones shows the following year. The band replaced one of their original guitarists and recorded this year’s excellent White Bear as a Led Zeppelin-influenced blues-rock-folk quintet. Glasgow-born vocalist Phil Campbell works in tandem with guitarists Paul Sayer and Matt White and a rhythm section that sports former Jamiroquai bassist Nick Fyffe and drummer Damon Wilson. White Bear is perfectly paced and deceptively casual newfangled rock with real content — the record’s “I Hope I’m Not Losing My Mind” says it all. EDD HURT
