The Brubeck Brothers Quartet

The name Brubeck is legendary in jazz circles, and both drummer Daniel Brubeck and bassist-trombonist Chris Brubeck have maintained that legacy for many years since the death of their esteemed father, the brilliant composer, bandleader and pianist Dave Brubeck. The brothers have been recording together since 1966, and they made their mark in multiple musical settings, from working alongside their father to playing with symphony orchestras and co-leading their quartet. The current unit, which also includes pianist Chuck Lamb and guitarist Mike DeMicco, has released five albums, and while they haven’t had a hit as unforgettable as the original Dave Brubeck Quartet’s 1959 classic “Take Five,” they’ve been a consistently enjoyable, and both commercially and artistically successful, ensemble. Chris has also amassed numerous impressive credits as a composer, from his acclaimed classical piece “Concerto for Bass Trombone and Orchestra” to collaborations with artists ranging from B.B. King to Willie Nelson, Gerry Mulligan and Paul Desmond. Still, both his and Daniel’s top priority remains the Brubeck Brothers Quartet. They play an inventive blend of originals, jazz standards, even some compositions featuring the unusual time signatures and rhythmic structures that were the trademark of the original Dave Brubeck groups. Their entire menu will be on offer this weekend at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center. RON WYNN
