The Boom Bap feat. DJ Spinna

The hip-hop dance-party crew behind The Boom Bap started 2018 strong and has kept the bar high. Not only did they kick off with a two-night blowout to celebrate their 10th anniversary — which featured top Nashville MCs and a guest DJ set from Just Blaze — but they also put on an oversized show at Cannery Ballroom with DJ Premier and M.O.P. Folks tend to take it easy during the lull between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, but not DJs Rate, Bowls and Case Bloom. For Saturday’s installment, the crew’s special guest is New York beatcrafting and turntablism master DJ Spinna. Comparing a DJ to the late, great J Dilla is clichéd and usually a little suspicious, but Spinna is on that level as far as creative, adventurous sampling choices and an uncanny ability to make a wide variety of beats that also sound distinctive. Spinna has made a deep study of house music and soul-jazz as well as hip-hop, and his electric and eclectic productions almost seem to breathe, like a machine that’s become self-aware. Come on out and let him move you. STEPHEN TRAGESER
