There are only a few ways to get behind the historic walls of the now-abandoned Tennessee State Prison on Bomar Boulevard in West Nashville. You could: A) work in Hollywood, as the remarkable fortress has been a filming site for a few movies, including Ernest Goes to Jail, The Last Castle and The Green Mile; or B) break some trespassing laws and jump the fence (not advised — barbed wire is involved). Or you could take advantage of the once-a-year opportunity to run behind the walls in the Tennessee Department of Correction’s Prison 5K Fun Run/Walk. As part of the run, you’ll get to weave your way through the prison site that’s generally only visible from the street, with your $25 registration fee benefiting the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Middle Tennessee. If you want to learn more about the prison — it has quite a sordid history, with stories of overcrowding, escape attempts and riots — opt for the walking history, narrated by guards, after the race.
