Saturday Family Films: The Princess Bride

If you’ve somehow never seen Rob Reiner’s 1987 romantic fantasy adventure that is also a loving send-up of romantic fantasy adventures, then this is easy: Go see The Princess Bride this weekend at the Belcourt. But the truly great thing about this tale of true love, friendship, rodents of unusual size and anti-authoritarian derring-do: If you have already seen it, the decision is even easier: Go see The Princess Bride this weekend at the Belcourt. And bring your kids! The film’s Wikipedia entry puts it as only Wikipedia can, and trust us that this isn’t fake news: “The film is widely regarded as eminently quotable.” No matter how many times you’ve said it, it’s still delightful to hear Inigo Montoya’s salutation to Count Rugen, Vizzini’s erroneous declaration of implausibility and the Impressive Clergyman’s wedding service in your own voice. But hold off on your impressions until after the movie — just in case the person next to you is seeing it for the first time. STEVEN HALE
