RnB Rewind Feat. Keith Sweat, Blackstreet, Ginuwine, SWV & More

Keith Sweat

New Jack Swing is more than just a ’90s subgenre — it was a turning point for both rap and R&B at a time when those genres’ top artists and teams didn’t often get along. But combining smooth singing with boom-bap beats turned out to be an undeniable match. Today the two genres see plenty of borrowing across style lines, and the boundaries are constantly blurred. (Drake is arguably the poster boy for today’s mesh of styles, but he’s definitely not the first to do it.) Plenty of those pioneering acts are still around, and you can find some of them on tour for RnB Rewind. Topping the bill is Keith Sweat, whose 1987 LP Make It Last put the subgenre on the map. He’ll be joined by pioneering R&B crew Blackstreet, reunited with former members Dave Hollister and Teddy Reilly, the latter of whom is a producer credited with creating the New Jack Swing genre. Also on the tour are Ginuwine, who dropped the everlasting jam “Pony,” and R&B trio SWV, best known for their string of hits including “Weak” and “I’m So Into You.” Rounding out the lineup are Donell Jones, Jon B., 112 and Next. 7:30 p.m. at Bridgestone Arena, 501 Broadway ALEJANDRO RAMIREZ
