Named after a Jimi Hendrix song, ’70s rock band Angel amalgamated prog and heavy metal in ways that sound a little quaint today. But that doesn’t matter — the convolutions of taste might bring us to the point when their Mellotron flourishes, sub-Rick Wakeman organ licks and acceptable rock guitar will be regarded as touchstones of the decade. Formed in Washington, D.C., in 1974, Angel was put together out of the remains of a group named Daddy Warbucks, who had cut an unreleased 1973 full-length with Aerosmith producer Jack Douglas. They boasted an impressive stage show, with special effects designed by famed magician Doug Henning, and they appeared onstage in white costumes. After the band split in the early ’80s, guitarist Punky Meadows went on to make his fortune by creating and selling a tanning-salon franchise. Tonight’s show features Meadows, whose 2016 full-length Fallen Angel is a decent return to form, along with Angel drummer Frank DiMino. Like someone once said, everything rocks and nothing ever dies.
