The glassy eyed Bobbie Patray: our next governor?
In this steamy summer of political sex scandal, we offer this question for debate, Pith Nation: Who has been screwed harder in the governor's race? Ron Ramsey or Zach Wamp? That's a tough one, isn't it? On the one hand, Ramsey definitely damaged his candidacy with missteps after the public learned of Paul Stanley's little mess. First, he said nothing. Then, after it became apparent that was a stupid idea, he told reporters he forced the senator to resign as Commerce Committee chair but really couldn't make him quit the Senate itself. Then after Senate GOP leader Mark Norris and Shelby County GOP chair Lang Wiseman stepped forward into the leadership vacuum to publicly call for Stanley's resignation, Ramsey insisted he'd been demanding Stanley's resignation privately all along. Now, Ramsey is really getting into the swing of things. At last report, he was denouncing the senator for sending McKensie Morrison to pick up his dry cleaning. And does anyone believe Ramsey didn't know what Stanley was doing in his love shack, as Phil Williams calls it? Ramsey has an apartment in the same complex. Stanley's roomie is the Christian wingnut Dewayne Bunch. No one knew a thing? Mark Brown scoffs:
No one has been damaged more by this scandal than Ramsey. His leadership has been called into question. His honesty is suspect. That's not a good combination for a gubernatorial candidate.
Wamp has been trapped in another scandal, this one involving his association with the secretive Christian society known as the Family. Wamp lives in the Family's C Street House in Washington. Three philandering politicians—Nevada Sen. John Ensign, former South Carolina Mississippi Rep. Chip Pickering and South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford—have ties to the Family and the C Street house. Of course, as every 8-year-old boy knows, avoiding answering questions about what goes on in your secret clubhouse is why you have a secret clubhouse in the first place. But when it comes to the particulars of a stew that contains elected officials, religious extremism, secretive financial backers, allegations of aspiring to undemocratic power structures, and involvement in three sex scandals, the public is going to have some questions and deserves some answers.
All of this must be tough for Christian conservatives to stomach. Sadly, both their candidates have been sullied by sex scandal and morally compromised. Life is so unfair. Pith is here to offer the solution. It's not too late for a dynamic new entry into the campaign.
