Students at Hume-Fogg Magnet High School walked out Wednesday morning, joining student protests across the country calling for gun control. As the crowd grew in front of the downtown school, students chanted "We want change!" and erupted into cheers every time a new group of students streamed out of the front doors. Tarana Burke, the #MeToo founder scheduled to speak at the school this morning, emerged at one point to tell the students they were doing exactly what she'd done at their age and that she stands "in complete solidarity" with them. Before some of the group marched off toward the Capitol, two students read off the names of the 17 victims of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., last month.
Sam Reinker, the Hume-Fogg student who made the first sign below, writes on Twitter: "I’m so happy to have been a part of Hume-Fogg’s walk out, and I hope the city will listen to our voices. We students are not too young to know that gun violence is an issue that our legislators can fix. Please keep us safe."
