The owners of East Nashville retail stalwart Cumberland Hardware have announced they will cease business operations on Dec. 31.
Located at 1018 Woodland St. in Five Points and offering an old-school vibe, the independently owned and operated hardware business traces its evolution to the early 1900s.
Sheila and John Varallo have owned and operated Cumberland Hardware for the past 42 years.
“This decision was not made lightly,” the Varallos say via social media, with no specific reasons given for the eventual closing.
In April, WKRN reported the Varallos’ business — billed as the longest-operating hardware retailer in Davidson County — was suffering due to parking concerns.
Nashville’s Clinard family, details about whom Scene sister publication the Nashville Post was unable to determine, owns the property, having paid $36,000 for it in 1985, per Metro records.
The Varallos write on their Facebook page they are “deeply thankful” for the loyalty and support of their customers.
“It has truly been our privilege to serve you, and we will always cherish the memories, friendships and relationships we have built along the way."
