The Nashville Women’s Rally Kicks Off Saturday at Public Square Park

The Power Together Tennessee Women's March, 2017

On Saturday, Jan. 18, Nashville women and their allies will gather downtown to support women’s rights in solidarity with the national Women’s March.

The Nashville Women’s Rally — sponsored by the Nashville Peace and Justice Center — will kick off at noon in Public Square Park. There will be music from singer-songwriter Nell Levin as well as a voter registration drive. Participants will hear speakers from organizations like Moms Demand Action, the Nashville Peace and Justice Center, and the Young Democrats. Transgender-rights advocate Marisa Richmond and writer and filmmaker Molly Secours will also speak at the event.

The rally will provide a closer-to-home alternative to the Power Together Tennessee Women’s March, which will take place in Murfreesboro this year. Power Together Tennessee states on its website that the shift in location is to march “where we can sustainably connect grassroots organizations to more Tennesseans on issues that matter to them the most.”

“We are not in competition with them, we are doing this in solidarity,” says Shannon Wood, who approached the Peace and Justice Center and asked them to sponsor the Nashville rally. Wood hopes the rally will also raise awareness about an upcoming celebration of the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage, taking place in August.

This will be the fourth annual event hosted in Nashville to coincide with the national Women’s March. In its first year, the march drew a crowd of 20,000 supporters, according to the Power Together Tennessee website.
