Did you know the Continental Congress approved the resolution to declare independence from Great Britain on July 2, 1776? (They gave the OK to the formal wording of the Declaration of Independence on July 4.) Did you know that on July 2, 1962, the first Walmart opened in Rogers, Ark.? (It was called Wal-Mart, which remains the formal corporate name of the Walton retail empire, befuddling business page copy editors to this day.) Did you know today is both Bret Hart and Jose Canseco's birthday (and Ozzie's)?
July 2, as you can tell, is very important!
It's critically important if you plan to vote in the upcoming Metro elections, as today marks 30 days until Election Day, thus it is the registration deadline.
Tennesseans, as we noted in a recent story, aren't great at voting or registering to vote, particularly for local elections.
Those who still need to TCB vis a vis registering can do so online or by mail (the law requires registration applications to be postmarked by today; postmarking is a process that occurs at a place called a post office, a quaint place that processes the kind of mail you can't delete with a click of a mouse).
Of course, after registering, one still has to vote. The voting, like the holding of the reservation, is the most important part. Early voting kicks off July 12 with Election Day Aug. 1.
The Founding Fathers and the Canseco twins would want you to do it.
